Mets’ front office wastes no time, makes first addition of offseason

NEW YORK — Eight days after the Mets’ magical season ended in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series against the Dodgers, the front office is hard at work, building the 2025 team.
On Monday, the Mets signed right-hander Chris Devenski to a minor league contract, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person requested anonymity because the signing has not been announced (Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported first). Devenski has been invited to Spring Training and will compete for a job on the big league roster.

Devenski struggled in his ninth big league season in 2024, allowing 20 earned runs in 26 2/3 innings (6.75 ERA) with the Rays. In June, the Rays had seen enough and released him.
The Mariners signed him soon after and assigned him to Triple-A Tacoma. In 23 appearances there, Devenski posted a 2.35 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 23 innings.
Under pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, the Mets had success with reclimation projects. Both Luis Severino and Sean Manaea experienced a resurgence in their first season with the Mets, the latter taking the leap of becoming the ace of the Mets’ staff in the final two months of the regular season and in the postseason.
Even mid-season addition Phil Maton saw his performance increase once traded to the Mets. In 40 games with the Rays, Maton had a 4.58 ERA in 35 1/3 innings. In 31 games with the Mets, he posted a 2.51 ERA in 28 2/3 innings, dropping his season ERA to 3.66.
In nine seasons, Devenski appeared in 303 games and has a 3.98 ERA with 415 strikeouts in 400 innings. He was an All-Star in 2017, the same season he helped the Astros win a World Series.
